Job Description
We're searching for a passionate and energetic Agency Manager to take the helm of our Norfolk Island operations! In this pivotal role, you'll not only lead and drive the success of the Norfolk Island entity but also collaborate closely with our Country Manager, Australia (CM) to oversee and optimize the daily operations across multiple agencies. Your mission? To ensure our processes, systems, and resources are firing on all cylinders, propelling the NPDL organization to new heights of success and growth!
Here is some of what you will be doing:
- Drive Outstanding Results: Lead the charge in sales strategy, planning, execution, and revenue generation while optimizing costs. Spearhead process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
- Master Debtor Management: Take command of overall agency debtor management, ensuring smooth cash flow and financial stability.
- Own the P&L: Be accountable for the EBITDA and overall direction of the Norfolk Island business, guiding the team to success.
- Shape the Future: Collaborate with senior management on strategic planning that aligns with our long-term vision and drives the agency forward.
- Lead Negotiations: Make key pricing decisions and lead high-stakes negotiations with customers to secure win-win outcomes.
- Execute with Excellence: Ensure all operations align with Principal requirements, delivering top-tier service and results.
- Manage with Impact: Oversee all Norfolk Island business units—including Stevedoring, Customs, Shipping agencies, and Air freight—driving exceptional performance across the board.
- Stay Compliant: Ensure the company meets all legislative requirements, maintaining a strong reputation and legal standing.
- Competitive Edge: Keep the Country Manager (CM) and senior management informed about competitive activities, market trends, and strategic insights.
- Cultivate Relationships: Manage VIP accounts and drive business development while engaging with industry leaders to expand our influence.
- Handle Payroll Like a Pro: Process weekly payroll using MYOB, ensuring timely and accurate compensation for the team.
- Financial Stewardship: Manage month-end receipting and financial reporting with precision, utilizing MYOB and CargoWise systems.
- Ensure Safety and Compliance: Adhere to WHS standards and meet all requirements set by Australian Border Force, Biosecurity, and AMSA.
- Report with Clarity: Prepare comprehensive reports and maintain documentation that reflects operational performance and continuous improvements.
- Champion Performance: Assist the CM in driving performance improvement initiatives across Norfolk Island and Australia.
- Uphold Standards: Ensure the agency meets all legislative requirements, both nationally and internationally, safeguarding our integrity.
- Cruise Ship Liaison Extraordinaire: Be the go-to person for coordinating with incoming cruise ships on Norfolk Island, ensuring seamless passenger transfers to and from the island. Manage the entire process—from arranging transfer vessels to scheduling pick-ups and drop-offs—creating a smooth and memorable experience for every traveler!
- Take on New Challenges: Carry out additional duties as directed by the CM, always ready to go the extra mile.
Qualifications
Here’s what you’ll bring to the table:
- Degree in Business or Equivalent: A solid foundation in business, or equivalent experience in a senior position, is essential to drive success.
- Industry Expertise: Bring a wealth of experience with at least 10 years in the shipping industry or a similar role, ensuring you hit the ground running.
- Trade Management Mastery: Over 5 years of proven trade management experience at a senior level, ready to steer operations to new heights.
- Leadership Excellence: With 5+ years in a leadership role, you're ready to inspire and lead teams to achieve outstanding results. A minimum of 3 years managing teams, ensuring collaboration and productivity.
- Results-Driven and Resilient: Thrive on challenges and excel under pressure, always delivering results that matter.
- Safety First: A strong commitment to health and safety, with a practical understanding of safety protocols.
- Integrity and Work Ethic: Demonstrate unwavering integrity and a strong work ethic in everything you do.
- Financial Savvy: Previous experience in payroll and budgeting, ensuring financial efficiency and accuracy.
- Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of legislative and WHS state requirements, along with regulatory body expectations.

- Emotionally Intelligent Leadership: A highly emotionally intelligent leader with exceptional interpersonal skills, capable of connecting with everyone on the team.

- Analytical Expertise: Strong analytical skills, with proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; experience with MYOB and CargoWise is an advantage.
- Strategic and Tactical Thinking: The ability to think both strategically and tactically, ensuring the organization’s needs are met.
- Communication Mastery: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present clearly, concisely, and persuasively at all levels of the organization.
- Negotiation and Networking Pro: Outstanding negotiation, networking, and influencing skills to build strong relationships and drive results.
- Clean Driver's License: A full, current, and clean driver's license is required.
- Sea-Ready: Not prone to seasickness, as this role involves time at sea in a transfer vessel. Ready to embrace the adventure!
This is a full-time permanent role based in Norfolk Island requiring occasional travel to the Pacific islands. As you have worked in shipping in the past, you will know a level of flexibility is required at times to work extended hours including weekends, public holidays, etc. In return we offer a challenging and stimulating environment. You will have the right to live and work in Norfolk Island at the time of applying. The successful candidate may be subject to undergo a Police Check and/or Pre-Employment Drug Test.
